Abstract: „Was there a community of Quartodecimans in Rome?“ –  The followers of the popular house church theory refer to an alleged quartodeciman (house-)community in Rome in the 2nd century, which existed beside numerous other house churches led by a presbyter until its excommunication under bishop Victor. The essay examines the arguments and comes to the conclusion that such an assertion cannot be substantiated by any text, but is based on a number of hypotheses that are neither individually nor collectively valid. S. 27-42 Ingo Schaaf   (Rom): Opfertod und Todessuche als Exemple in Antike und Christentum   Abstract: „Self  - sacrifice and the search for death as an example in antiquity and Christianity“ –     Since Jesusʼ questioning by Pilate the reactions of the pagans in view of the non-violent steadfastness of persecuted Christians were marked by incomprehension. While such behaviour seemed to the Roman authorities to be nothing more than obstinate, it is well known that Tertullian can speak of the seed of the martyrs’ blood burgeoning in the expanding church. But how, intellectually, was the ground prepared for this process, or which views stood in the way of its unfolding? Starting from remarks on the profane concept of μάρτυς/μαρτύριον, the contribution traces the question under which premise s the Christian willingness to suffer could be interpreted on the pagan side with particular emphasis on the accusation of suicide. Reciprocally to this it is discussed whether and, if so, in which way pagan ideas and figures offered points of contact for a specific Christian theology of martyrdom or could serve as a contrasting foil against the background of which corresponding ideas could be profiled in late antiquity. In this double perspective, so the basic assumption, one challenges not only the application of conventional derivation models to Christian martyrdom, thus keeping its proprium recognizable, but also better measures its radius of action in the midst of a non-Christian environment. Pilgerberichte als historische Quelle   Abstract: „From Venice to the Holy Land and Egypt: Pilgrim reports as a historical source“ –  The article examines what other important information the widely read travelogues of late medieval Jerusalem pilgrims have to offer the historian, in addition to the the actual, religious concerns of their authors: especially for the  2 trade history with the Near East, the spice trade with India, the ability to think globally, the structure of the Venetian sea area, and for the literary genre of the medieval travelogue itself. S. 80-116 Daniel Edwin Dominik Müller  (Bonn): „Magna Charta of All Claims of the Papacy“? The Impact of the Constitutum   Constantini   on the Argument in Favour oft he Papal Primacy (c. 800-1076/77) Abstract: Being one of the most prominent forgeries in world history, the Constitutum Constantini   was repeatedly seen as the cornerstone of politically meddling papacies that presumably had enabled the Roman bishops to engage in secular politics in the first place. What in doing so scholarly research has not paid attention to properly, this essay tries to stress: After analysing the apparently overflowing opportunities the forgery offers (cap. B.I.), the papal reception of it both in times of relatively uncontested papacies before the Investiture Controversy (cap. B.II.1.) as well as in times of severe challenges during the conflict with the German king in the course of the events of 1076/77 (cap. B.II.2.) turns out to be surprisingly meagre. While this assessment of the reception history of the flat forgery only demonstrates its inherent impotence to substantiate a papal supremacy claim, this paper concludes that the higher plausibility lies with the assumption that the Constitutum Constantini    serves someone else’s than papal needs and therefore was likely neither produced on request of a pope nor in Rome at all (cap. B.III.). With that, the author proposes the Frankish Empire and, more specifically, the late eighth- or early ninth-century monastery of St Denis as the probable place of srcin of the forgery. S. 117-133 Ulrich Karpen  (Köln): Hans Peters, die Görres-Gesellschaft und der Kreisauer Kreis  Abstract: „Hans Peters, the Görres Society and the Kreisauer Kreis“ –  Hans Peters was president of the Görres Society from 1940 until the suppression of the Society in 1941 and after its re-establishment from 1945 to 1966. He was a teacher of constitutional law in Berlin and Cologne and was practically politically active both in the Weimar Republic and in the Federal Republic of Germany at the central and municipal levels. He was a member of the Kreisauer Kreis, a resistance group around Helmut James Graf von Moltke, which met with about 30 people from 1938 to 1943 at the estate Kreisau near Breslau and wrote several programmatic memorandums on the reconstruction of Germany after the expected end of the National Socialist regime. Peters was one of the most influential members of the circle. He represented the basic values of the Görres Society stimulatingly and effectively in difficult times. The Kreisauersʼ plans dealt with the „restoration of the human image in the hearts of the citizens“, with the institutional problems of the reconstruction of Germany and with the position of post-war Germany in the world. Important considerations of the Kreisauer Kreis were incorporated into the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany. S. 134-147 Bernhard Hülsebusch  (Rom): Eine vergessene Inschrift von Theodor Heuss für Papst Pius XII. Wie kam es zur deutschen “Dankspende” in der römischen Kirche Sant’Eugenio?   Abstract: „A forgotten inscription by Theodor Heuss for Pope Pius XII. How did the German ,donation of thanksʻ come about in the Roman Church of SantʼEugenio?“ –  After the Second World War, the Federal Republic of Germany created a foundation from which representative art gifts were financed to individuals and institutions who had rendered outstanding services to the Germans during the war. Among them was a gift to Pope Pius XII, who was very popular in Germany, a mosaic that is still to be found today at the Church of SantʼEugenio in Rome.  S. 148-150 Isabelle Mossong  (Luxemburg): Rez.
